Engine Oil & Lubricants

This category stocks marine engine oils and lubricants for outboard and inboard engines – 2-stroke and 4-stroke oils, gear oil, and general marine grease, graded for the higher loads and saltwater environment engines see on the water.

The most important choice is matching oil to engine type: 2-stroke outboards need oil designed to be burned with the fuel (TC-W3 rated for most), while 4-stroke outboards and inboards need a separate engine oil, typically a marine-specific 10W-30 or 25W-40, changed on its own schedule rather than mixed with fuel. Don’t substitute car engine oil for marine 4-stroke oil – marine oils contain additives suited to the lower, more variable RPM range and higher moisture exposure engines see on the water. Gear oil for the lower unit/leg is a separate product again and should be checked for water contamination (a milky colour) at each service, since a failed seal there is a common and expensive fault if missed.

Service outboards annually or per the manufacturer’s hour interval, whichever comes first – Irish boats often do low hours but sit exposed to damp for months, which ages oil and seals faster than hours alone suggest.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use car oil in my boat engine?

No – marine 4-stroke oil is formulated for the moisture exposure and RPM range of marine use; automotive oil doesn’t offer the same protection and isn’t recommended by outboard manufacturers.

How do I know if I need 2-stroke or 4-stroke oil?

Check your outboard’s manual or model plate – 2-stroke engines mix oil with fuel and need TC-W3-rated oil; 4-stroke engines take a separate engine oil, changed like a car’s.

How often should I change my outboard’s gear oil?

At least once a year, and check its colour at every service – a milky tint means water has got in through a worn seal and needs attention before it damages the gearbox.
