Our Marine Flares selection covers in-date distress flares and signals for Irish coastal waters: handheld red flares, parachute rockets and orange smoke signals, for visually signalling distress to nearby vessels, aircraft or the shore.

Different flare types suit different situations: handheld red flares are the standard close-range distress signal, visible to nearby vessels; parachute rockets fire high and are seen from much further away, useful offshore or when you need to attract attention from a distance; orange smoke signals work best in daylight, when a bright red flare is harder to spot against the sky. Most leisure boats carry a combination rather than relying on one type. Flares have a fixed expiry, typically around 3 years from manufacture, and must be replaced on schedule – an expired flare may not fire reliably and shouldn’t be relied on as your primary means of raising an alarm.

Dispose of expired flares safely and legally rather than keeping them as backup or discharging them yourself; ask us about disposal options when you replace them. Increasingly, flares are carried alongside (not instead of) an EPIRB or PLB, which alerts the Irish Coast Guard directly via satellite.
