Sealants & Lubricants

Our Sealants & Lubricants range covers marine sealants and lubricants for bedding and bonding fittings and keeping moving parts working smoothly – from polyurethane sealants for deck hardware to general-purpose marine greases and lubricating sprays.

Sealants and lubricants solve different problems and shouldn’t be confused: a sealant (like a polyurethane or silicone marine sealant) beds and waterproofs a fitting, creating a flexible waterproof barrier where two surfaces meet, while a lubricant reduces friction and protects moving metal parts from seizing or corroding. For bedding deck hardware, fittings and portlights, use a marine-rated sealant rather than a household equivalent, since marine products are formulated to stay flexible and adhere reliably through temperature swings and constant damp exposure. For moving parts – hinges, seacocks, winches, sliding hatch tracks – a marine grease or lubricating spray displaces moisture and prevents the seizing that’s common on fittings left unused over winter lay-up.

Apply lubricant before problems start rather than after something’s already stuck, since a seized fitting often needs far more effort (and sometimes replacement) to free than routine lubrication would have taken to prevent.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a sealant and a lubricant?

A sealant beds and waterproofs a fitting where two surfaces meet; a lubricant reduces friction and protects moving parts from seizing or corroding.

Can I use household sealant on deck fittings?

It’s not recommended – marine sealants are formulated to stay flexible and adhere reliably through temperature swings and constant damp exposure in a way household products aren’t.

How often should I lubricate moving parts like seacocks and hinges?

Regularly, before problems start – a seized fitting often needs far more effort or replacement to free than routine lubrication would have taken to prevent.
