Fibreglass Cloth & Tapes

Our Fibreglass Cloth & Tapes range covers fibreglass cloth, matting and repair tapes for GRP work – the reinforcement materials used with resin to rebuild strength in a repair, from a small crack to a larger structural laminate job.

Cloth, matting and tape serve different roles in a GRP repair. Woven fibreglass cloth gives the best strength-to-weight ratio and a smoother finish, generally preferred for visible or structural repairs where appearance and strength both matter. Chopped strand matting is cheaper and easier to shape around curves and corners, often used for backing or bulking out a repair rather than the final structural or cosmetic layer.

Fibreglass repair tape is the quickest option for small, simple jobs – a crack or a minor puncture – where a full cloth layup would be overkill. Match weight (measured in grams per square metre or ounces) to the job: heavier cloth for structural repairs that need real strength, lighter cloth for cosmetic or thin-section work. Always work with epoxy resin for the strongest, most reliable bond to old laminate, and follow proper wetting-out technique – trapped air between layers is one of the most common causes of a repair that looks fine but doesn’t hold structural load.

Frequently asked questions

Cloth, matting or tape for my repair?

Cloth for visible or structural repairs needing strength and a smooth finish; matting for cheaper bulking/backing work; tape for quick, small jobs like a crack or minor puncture.

What weight of fibreglass cloth should I use?

Heavier cloth for structural repairs needing real strength, lighter cloth for cosmetic or thin-section work – match it to the job rather than defaulting to one weight for everything.

What’s the most common mistake in a DIY fibreglass repair?

Trapped air between layers during wetting-out, which weakens the repair even if it looks fine on the surface – work resin through each layer carefully before adding the next.
