A float switch automates your electric bilge pump so it runs when water rises rather than relying on you to switch it on manually – essential if the boat is left unattended on a mooring or marina berth for any length of time. A separate high-water alarm is worth adding even if you already have an automatic pump, since it alerts you (audibly, or via a monitoring system on some models) if water is rising faster than the pump can cope with, which a silent, automatic pump alone won’t tell you. Check the float switch is compatible with your specific bilge pump’s wiring before ordering, and mount it where it won’t be fouled by debris in the bilge.
