Fuel stabiliser matters more for boats than cars, since marine engines often sit idle for long stretches between trips or over winter lay-up, and modern ethanol-blended petrol degrades and absorbs water faster than older fuel formulations – a stabiliser added at lay-up, or used regularly if the boat isn’t run often, reduces the risk of gummed-up carburettors and injectors come spring. Diesel treatments address a different issue: diesel bug (microbial growth in the fuel-water interface) is a genuine and common problem in marine diesel tanks, especially in humid conditions, and a biocide treatment used preventatively is far cheaper than clearing a contaminated fuel system. Always check compatibility with your specific engine and fuel type before adding any treatment.
