A tapered pole puts the material where the load is and takes it away from the ends, which lowers the weight out at the extremities where it is felt most during a gybe. This one is built for the 420 and comes complete rather than as a bare tube, with Selden ends, the trip line already fitted and an eye for the uphaul, so it can go straight onto the boat. For a class where the pole is handled repeatedly on every downwind leg, the ends are the part that determines how easily it clips on and off, and the Selden fittings are a known quantity. Check your class rules before fitting if the boat is used for measured racing.
