A tiller extension gets more abuse than almost anything else on an Optimist, and the joint is where it fails. This Deluxe extension uses a releasable two-part rubber joint with a rope core moulded through the middle, so if the rubber does tear the extension stays attached to the tiller rather than going over the side mid-race. The two-part base also lets the whole extension come off the tiller for storage, which is worth doing over winter because it stops the joint sitting bent for months. At 128 grams on a 60 cm black anodised tube it is light in the hand, and the long foam grip gives a young sailor plenty of room to move their hand fore and aft while hiking.
